Chapter Twelve

“Is she okay?’ Detective O’Reilly asks, picking up the bracelet where I flung it in the grass.

“They’re in an old shed. There are pool supplies. He’s going to force her to ingest them.” I’m shaking now. I saw the vision as an outsider, not from Vernon’s or Stella’s perspective, which means I experienced both her fear and his rage. The two emotions are warring for control of my body right now.

Mitchell pulls me to him and mimics deep breaths. “Focus on my breathing. Can you feel the rise and fall of my chest?”

“We don’t have time!” I scream at him.

“There used to be a pool in this community,” Detective O’Reilly says. It was filled in with concrete about a year ago. Do you think the shed is near that?”

Goose bumps form on my arms. “Let’s go. Now! Do you know where it is?” I ask her.

“I’ll drive.”

This time I don’t complain about being in the back of the patrol car. I just want to get to Stella Dwyer on time. I promised her husband I’d find her, and he’s expecting me to bring her home alive.

Detective O’Reilly turns on the flashing lights and speeds through the community.

“Don’t turn on the sirens,” Mitchell says. “We need the element of surprise.”

“No, we don’t. We need Vernon to try to run,” I say. “If he thinks fleeing is the only way to avoid being arrested, he might leave Stella. It could be our only way to save her.”

“I agree with Piper,” Detective O’Reilly says, flipping on the siren. She tears through the community toward the back entrance. Just before the back gate, there’s a road leading to the right. Detective O’Reilly takes it. A small abandoned recreation area comes into view. There’s a gate around what used to be the pool. The area is overgrown, proving it hasn’t been used in a long time.

“Keep the siren on,” I tell her. “We need Vernon to hear it.”

“He heard it,” Mitchell says, looking out the window. “He’s running away!” Mitchell gets out of the moving patrol car. Luckily, Detective O’Reilly has slowed considerably.

She parks and gets out of the vehicle. But she makes no move to open the back door for me.

I bang on the window. “Let me out!”

She hesitates for a moment, as if she’s not sure she wants to bring me along, but then she opens the car door for me. She doesn’t wait, though. She takes off for the shed beside the pool.

I hurry to catch up. Detective O’Reilly has Stella’s bracelet, but I still have a sense of Stella’s energy now that I know what it feels like. She’s alive in there.

As we approach the shed, Stella calls out to us. She’s not gagged, by the sound of it, which means we got here probably seconds before Vernon poisoned her. Detective O’Reilly tries the door, but it’s locked. Vernon must not have left that way because we would have seen him sooner.

I run around to the back of the shed where a window is open.
